In conversation with Benjamin O'Brien from the Natural Medicine and Nutrition Clinic.
In episode #64 of The Committed Creative podcast, Benjamin O’Brien, owner of the Natural Medicine and Nutrition Clinic and Acupuncture, shares his journey into the world of natural medicine and discussed the principles and benefits of Chinese medicine.
Exploring Chinese medicine
Chinese medicine is a holistic approach to health and healing that focuses on balance and restoring the body’s ability to heal itself. Benjamin explains, “The body has a strong ability to heal, and when it’s not happening, we need to investigate what’s going on and help the body regenerate.”
Chinese medicine incorporates various modalities, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, physical therapy, and more. Benjamin emphasises that Chinese medicine treats the person as a whole, rather than just focusing on specific symptoms or organs.
The role of Chinese medicine in chronic conditions
Many patients seek out Chinese medicine after trying various treatments in Western medicine without success. Benjamin notes, “Western medicine is brilliant at diagnostics and traumatology, but for chronic conditions, it’s not very good at treating that.”
Chinese medicine offers an alternative approach to chronic conditions by addressing the underlying causes, such as lifestyle, diet, and emotional factors. Benjamin shared his own experience of using acupuncture to rehabilitate his hand after losing its use due to open heart surgery.
He says that Chinese medicine aims to fix the root source of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms.
Integrating Chinese medicine with Western medicine
When asked about the integration of Chinese medicine with Western medicine, Benjamin expressed his desire to see the two approaches work together.
He shares his experience of studying and practicing in China, where Chinese medicine is integrated into hospitals and treated with the same level of seriousness as Western medicine.
Benjamin believes Chinese medicine has a lot to offer and should be incorporated into mainstream healthcare. He says, “Some people need Western medicine, and that’s super important. But there’s no reason that they can’t work in tandem and offer patients the best of both worlds.”
Patient retention and building a successful practice
Benjamin discusses the importance of patient retention and building a successful practice. He emphasises the need to provide quality care and focus on helping patients achieve their desired results.
Benjamin shared his approach of conducting an initial examination to understand the patient’s needs and develop a personalised treatment plan. He highlights the significance of follow-up and reaching out to patients to ensure their progress.
Benjamin believes that word-of-mouth referrals are the best form of marketing and that providing exceptional care leads to repeat business and new referrals.
Overcoming challenges in business
Running a clinic and dealing with people’s health crises can be challenging. Benjamin acknowledges the difficulties he faced, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, he drew strength from his belief in the validity of Chinese medicine and his passion for helping people. Benjamin is keen to open a larger clinic in the future and eventually establish a hospital that incorporates both Chinese and Western medicine. This is his ultimate dream.
In the meantime, Ben hopes to contribute to the integration of these two approaches and provide comprehensive healthcare options for patients.

The future of Chinese medicine
Chinese medicine offers a holistic approach to health and healing that focuses on restoring balance and allowing the body to heal itself.
Ben’s dedication to helping people and his vision for the future of healthcare make him a committed advocate for Chinese medicine. As we move forward, he believes it’s essential to recognise the value of alternative approaches and work towards a more comprehensive and inclusive healthcare system.
